Grace Hopper 2012: Baltimore, Maryland

A ship in port is safe; but that is not what ships are built for. Sail out to sea and do new things. - Grace Hopper

This year Grace Hopper was in Baltimore Maryland!

We had about 30 girls from UCSD attend this year, which put us in the top 10 schools for attendance!

This year they broke up the dancing in two nights! The first night was a dance party at the convention center where Marjori and I got to meet Alan Eustace!

And the second night was at the Science Center in Baltimore and was hosted by Microsoft, Google and RSA!

Not only did we get to dance, but we got to explore the science center,

Take funny pictures,

And eat delicious cupcakes!!

But Grace Hopper isn't JUST about the parties and yummy desserts, it's mostly about the thousands of inspirational women who get together every year to celebrate being technical women!

This year at Grace Hopper I attended sessions, networked with so many people and hopefully inspired some as well. Every year you learn something new and I hope next year we can get even more UCSD women to attend and grow our community in ways we could have never imagined!

New Zealand

This summer I had the opportunity to go to New Zealand for ICER. But before the conference, Adrian and I travelled the north island via campervan.

We first arrived in Auckland and picked up our Campervan

First stop on our travels was Hobbiton, the set of the Hobbit village in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and in The Hobbit movies. We got to visit Bilbo Baggins home!

Then we went to Rotorua where we set up in our van for the first night

Then we explored the Redwoods by way of Mountain Bikes!

But I flipped over my handlebars and broke my bike :(

We then travelled south to Lake Taupo

And Adrian got to do a little fishing

We got to hike through beautiful forests

And see incredible waterfalls

We even got to relax in natural hot springs

As we left Lake Taupo we travelled into the Tangariro National Park

We went on a 6 hour hike

Where we ended up at the Lower Tama Lake

With an incredible view of the volcanoes

Then we got in a tiny airplane

And flew around the three volvanos, one was used in the Lord of the Rings as Mordor and one was use in the Lord of the Rings as Mt. Doom
Mt Doom

Mordor

And we saw a volcano that blew just last month!
It was still smoking!

We even saw the Tama lakes! The lower one that we walked to and the upper one

What a flight!

Then we travelled down to Wanganui where we swung out over the river

And we rode the Durie Hill elevator (elevator that goes THROUGH a hill)

Where there was a beautiful view of Wanganui at the top

On our way to New Plymouth, Adrian went fishing again

New Plymouth was mainly rainy. Adrian went fishing and I stayed in the warm van where I worked on my SIGCSE paper, no pictures.

On our way back to Auckland we stopped in Waitomo for a bit of Black Water Rafting (rafting through caves)!

We were excited to get into the caves

We meandered through the dark corridors

But made it out successfully!

Then we dropped off the van back in Auckland and took a ferry to Waiheke Island where we had a hotel room with the most magnificent view!

We went out to a fancy dinner

Walked down the beach

Found some tide pools

and beautiful parks

Adrian went fishing again

And then we sadly had to return to the city via the ferry

Lastly, I went to ICER while Adrian went out on a fishing boat, he saw beautiful rainbows

And caught lots of fish!

All in all this was an AMAZING trip!

Mammoth Lake

This weekend I went to Mammoth with Liz Bales to visit Liza Cowan.

We spent our time cooking, coding, hiking and eating :)
Convicts Lake

You can find more about our cooking in Liz's blog!

This was a great weekend! I learned that I definitely want to live somewhere as beautiful as Mammoth, that I love what I do and I love who I do it with!
